How to Pack for a Safari: Essential Packing Tips for a Long Safari in Tanzania

Smart packing is essential when preparing for your safari. Planning ahead with the right gear and clothing can ensure you’ve got everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable trip.

At Sassabi Expeditions, we’re here to make sure you feel well-prepared for the adventure of a lifetime! Know what to expect and make the most of your travel with our essential packing tips:

Consider the Weather

In Tanzania, the weather can vary greatly depending on the season and exact location within the country. Generally, you can expect warmer temperatures most of the year, as we are located just below the equator.

On average, in the central, northern, and western regions, you can expect temperatures to range from 70°F to 90°F/20°C to 30°C. Typically, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti are cooler than other locations because of their higher altitude. The warmest months are between December and March with temperatures reaching as high as 95°F/35°C, while the coolest months are between June and July, with temperatures averaging around 70°F/20°C.

June – October is the dry season with clear skies and lots of sun. This is the best time to see the Great Wildebeest Migration and visit the Southern and Western circuit parks. November – March is the wet season and marks the start of the calving season for wildebeests, gazelles, and zebras. This is a fantastic time for migratory bird watching as well. April and May is the peak of the rainy season and can affect wildlife viewing.

As your travel date nears, research weather conditions to plan accordingly.

Layer Up for Changing Temperatures

Layering is key as temperatures can fluctuate from chilly mornings to hot afternoons. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and comfortable pants to protect yourself from the sun and insects.

We recommend starting with a moisture-wicking base layer, adding an insulating layer, and topping it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. This allows you to easily adjust your clothing as the temperature changes throughout the day. And don’t forget a waterproof jacket or poncho for any unexpected rain showers!

An Outfit Fit For an Adventure

When it comes to planning and packing an outfit for your safari adventure, many travelers like to embrace the classic safari style seen in movies. This look includes khaki pants, breathable white shirts, and a wide brim hat. Perhaps with a scarf or vest to boot!
Feeling like you’re stepping into your own movie character can add to the thrill of your experience. So, make your style planning a part of the adventure itself and have fun channeling your inner adventurer!

Bring Personal Toiletries and Comfort Items

While our safari camps and lodges provide basic toiletries, we still recommend bringing your own personal items. Pack travel-sized toiletries for essentials and prepare a small kit with any of your regular medications.

Other comfort items include polarized sunglasses, insect repellent, and sunscreen. And you’ll definitely want a reliable camera with extra batteries and memory cards for capturing the abundance of wildlife you will see!

While you’re welcome to bring your own, all our safari tours provide a pair of binoculars to gaze in detail at the wildlife around you. There will be a lot to see and we’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Pack Just the Essentials

Be mindful of any luggage restrictions within your travel and transportation modes and pack only what you need to avoid unnecessary baggage. Typically, international flights will allow 50 lbs/22 kgs per bag but it’s best to check your exact carrier and ticket class for specifics.

Essential items to have ready include a valid passport, travel documents, insurance details, and any necessary visas. Before you depart, check vaccination requirements (such as yellow fever) as well and ensure you have any required medical documentation prepared.

If your safari itinerary includes domestic flights within the country, such as our Ultimate Fly Around Safari package, we encourage you to consult our safari experts for advice on luggage as there may be additional size and weight limitations.

Be Mindful of Wildlife Conservation

At Sassabi Expeditions, we take great pride and effort in protecting our wilderness. Pack with the environment and wildlife in mind and avoid single-use plastic items, opting instead for reusable alternatives. Follow park rules and regulations, respect the natural environment, and do not disturb the animals or their habitats.

Help us protect Tanzania’s precious ecosystem for future generations to enjoy!

Check for Additional Safari-Specific Items

Depending on your safari itinerary, there may be additional items you should pack. In this event, your personal safari expert will be in touch with you to provide a detailed packing list outlining any other specifics as needed once your safari is booked.
